Why the Turning of the Fagus is a must see
As the frost-kissed air descends upon Tasmania's majestic Mt Field National Park, Nothofagus gunnii emerges as a beacon of Autumn and adventure amidst the alpine landscape. While the off-season may deter some travelers, for us, it heralds a time of unparalleled beauty and experiences waiting to be savored.
Through spring and summer you could easily miss the Fagus. When it starts to take on it's autumn colour however - you cannot ignore this stunning plant.
Australia's only native deciduous tree, the Nothofagus gunnii, or Fagus as we know it, turns a wide array of autumn colours - sometimes all in the one branch.
The dainty leaves are instantly recognisable and the colour, contrasted by the rocks in the boulder field is instantly captivating.
The Fagus Walk, along the shore of Lake Fenton, is a short walk that is mostly flat. There are some rocks towards the end but a well maintained dirt path.
For the more adventurous, the Tarn Shelf hike will reward you with stunning Fagus scenery. Not only will you be greeted by mountainsides of autumn colour, on a clear day it is reflected in the tarns (little alpine lakes).
Mt Field National Park is one of the most stunning, and accessible, places to experience the turning of the Fagus.
Fagus normally turns around ANZAC Day (late April) although weather depending it could be early or later. Some years the spectacle has lasted for weeks.
Photographers and adventurers from around the globe are learning what an amazing time this is to visit and experience Mt Field.
Make sure you book your stay so you don't miss out!
